Public Invited to Sally B. Wallace Historic Preservation Awards Reception Friday

Galveston Historical Foundation's (GHF)'s Preservation Resource Center (PRC) will host the 2009 Sally B. Wallace Historic Preservation Awards Reception at 6 p.m., May 8, at the Ashton Villa Ballroom. The event will kick off the second weekend of the 35th annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour --which this year showcases 10 privately owned historic homes and runs Saturday and Sunday May 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Preservation Awards Reception is free and open to the public. Reservations are required.

R.S.V.P. by 5 p.m. Thursday, May 7, to Becky Maixner at GHF: 409-765-7834 or foundation@galvestonhistory.org.

Named in honor of a pivotal Galveston historic preservation pioneer, the annual award ceremony recognizes the projects, craftspeople, and individuals that help improve the historic architectural stock of Galveston Island.

GHF has updated its preservation awards for this year. New award categories include the Galveston GREEN Award for companies or individuals that integrate sustainable materials and technology in retrofitting historic properties and the Post-IKE Recovery award for individuals/companies that have made significant progress in rehabilitating their respective properties.

Special guests will include the CEO and employees of Arcadia Press, publishers of Galveston: A City on Stilts, the story of Galveston’s reconstruction after the Great Storm of September 8, 1900. The book contains 200 vintage photographs from the Zeva B. Edworthy collection that document the rebuilding of the city in the early 1900s. Books will be available for purchase. Authors Jodi Wright-Gidley and Jennifer Marines will also be available to sign copies.

The Preservation Awards Reception is being held in conjunction with the 2009 Galveston Historic Homes Tour. The 35th annual tour celebrates Historic Galveston’s Rebirth with nine

special events and seven added attractions to enhance the experience of visiting the ten restored historic homes that make up the tour.

Advance tickets for Homes Tour and special events are available on the Galveston Historical Foundation website www.galvestonhistory.org or by calling 1-877-77CLICK. For tour information call 409-765-7834.
